2 Day Fruit Cleanse – Done

Over the past two days I did a cleanse that involved eating nothing but fruit. At the beginning of day one I weighed 160lbs. On the beginning of day two I had dropped 2lbs to 158. I lost another .5lbs during the second day finishing the cleanse at 157.5lbs. It was much harder to stick to the diet than I had anticipated (although I did). After the first couple of purely fruit meals, the sweetness was overwhelming. I made a couple of smoothies which helped. And, I ate avocados and tomatoes as well which weren't nearly as sweet as the rest of the fruit. The dates were by far the sweetest and I had a really tough time choking them down after a while. By the end of the second day I was crazily craving regular food--I had never noticed how many food commercials are on TV. My energy levels on day one weren't any different than normal.  But, on day two, I had zero energy at all.  I spent the entire day laying on the couch watching movies (well, that's what I do almost every Sunday, but I had much less energy while doing it).  I think I was probably a little dehydrated as well.  I had a tough time drinking enough water because my stomach felt so full all the time from the fruit.

So, am I "cleansed"? I don't really feel any different than before I started but there's no doubt that my body did expel a considerable amount of substance. I can only hope that some of that was toxins and other unnecessary things.  I would definitely recommend the 2 day fruit diet as a way to jump start a weight-loss program (which was not my intent, I plan to gain back all my lost weight and more).

Here's what I ate over the 2-day period:

  • 7 apples
  • 7 bananas
  • 5 pears
  • 6 avocados
  • 2 cantaloupes
  • 1.5 cups chopped strawberries
  • 1.5 cups blueberries
  • 7 or 8 cherry tomatoes
  • 2 1/4 cups of dates

2 day fruit diet – Beginning of Day 1

Last night I went to the store and stocked up on enough fruit to get me around 3,000 calories per day for the next 2 days.  This included:

-5 Avocados

-8 Apples

-10 Bananas

-2 Cantaloupe

-  6 Pears

-2lbs of Dates

and some strawberries and blueberries.  The total cost was $34 which isn't really too bad for two days worth of food; that's basically the cost of two restaurant meals.  This morning I weighed 160lbs before eating anything.  We'll see how the day progresses.....

And, while we're on the subject of fruit, here's an old song/video by my cousin Dan Lee titled "Bite that Apple". Enjoy:

2 day Fruit “Cleanse” – The Beginning

I've been in kind of a running funk lately.  My short runs have been great but I've been having trouble putting together good long runs.  I just feel drained and tired and have zero energy past about 10 miles regardless of how I fuel.  I've also been having quite a bit of trouble sleeping lately which just makes everything worse.  I haven't really taken any time off from running since the week after Leadville in August, and I've been running pretty hard since then, so I suspect that over-training may be the culprit.  I've decided to take the next week and a half off from running and just do some other low-stress activities instead.  Maybe some yoga, etc...  In addition, I'm going to take this opportunity to revamp my diet and start remaining committed to eating healthy 100% of the time.  I already eat pretty well but I do put a fair share of garbage into by body from time to time.  To kick start this change I'm going to begin with a "cleanse" this weekend.

I've been inspired by reading The Fruitarian's blog but I'm not quite ready to adopt a wholly fruitarian lifestyle.  I've also read about the benefits of 2 or 3 day cleanses that involve consuming only fruit and I've decided to give that a try.  Beginning tonight I'll be eating only fruit for the entire weekend.  After work I'll be heading over to my local organic grocer to stock up on fruit.   I'll post updates on this blog throughout the weekend to keep you all informed of my progress.  Stay tuned.....!

Both the Scariest and Coolest Thing I’ve Seen in a While

The Instamapper app for the iPhone (and other phones) can track your phone and update your location on a Google map that is embeddable into your own webpage (you have to sign up on Instamapper's website to do it).  And it's all free! (Of course, I don't know if they could really expect you to accept being charged to have someone track your every move).  I've always been wary of technology like this but I figure that anyone  that has the technology and really wants to can locate me can track down my phone anyway.  This would be great for my wife to be able to track me during races (any race that has coverage which will hopefully be hardly any this year as I head to the mountains for most of my running).

It only works when the app is running on the phone.  I'll take my phone with me on some runs this weekend and see how it works.
